A Single Girls Valentine’s Day

Generally, I’m not a massive fan of Valentine’s day, but this year I decided to do things a little differently.
In years past I’ve spent my single Valentine’s days lonely and envious of those with people to spend the day with. I also went through a phase of referring to the pseudo -holiday as a “capitalist driven scam meant to trick people into spending money on fake evidence of their ‘love'”. I went through a cynical phase, can you tell?
Lately though, I’ve started to see that Valentine’s day is, in fact a day of celebrating love. whether its celebrating the love in a relationship, or celebrating self love. 

The Look:

Even though I’m spending this Valentine’s day in my pjs watching rom-coms, I decided to do a pretty-in-pink look to celebrate the holiday!
For my base, my face, my eyebrows, and my mascara,  I used pretty much all the same products as in my Casual Christmas Look.
Except the highlighter, In this look I used the 
PHYSICIANS FORMULA Butter Highlighter  in Pearl and I am 100% obsessed with it.

My Eyes-
To achieve this pretty pink look I used the 
ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS Modern Renaissance Eye Shadow Palette
I started by fluffing Buon Fresco into my crease with a fluffy brush, followed by a slight dusting of Love Letter  lower in the crease and slightly onto my lid. I took a second to blend those two together, and then I placed Venetian Red on my outer corner with a tapered brush. I blended this slightly into the outer part of the crease, but I kept it mostly focused on the outer corner of the eye. After getting all of my mattes placed, I used the URBAN DECAY Al Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray to foil Vermeer , and I placed that on the inner two thirds of my lid, blending the edges slightly. To finish off the look, I used a thin angled brush to create a winged eyeliner effect with Cyprus Umber.  

 

My Lips- 

On my lips I’m wearing the HUDA BEAUTY Liquid Matte Lipstick in Crush
I love this formula and I absolutely love this colour, Its a good everyday colour. If I were to do this look again though, I’d use a lip colour thats a little less peachy, and a little more pink.

Some Tips For Loving Yourself This Valentine’s Day:

When you’re single, Valentine’s day can be a day filled with sadness and jealousy, when it should be a day filled with celebrating self love. So here are a few tips for how you can show yourself a little self love this Valentine’s day.

Take Yourself Out-
If you don’t want to spend this Valentine’s day on your couch, then don’t be afraid to ask yourself on a date!Personally, I love going to movies alone, and I love sitting on a coffee shop patio drinking a SOLO espresso. So I can throughly recommend putting on your favourite outfit,  taking yourself out to your favourite place, and savouring the simplicity, and the silence, of doing something you love, alone. There is no one else to contend with,  and nobody else to wait for, everything is on your time line. Doing things alone also provides much needed time with yourself to nurture the most important relationship in your life.

Treat Yourself To a Little Luxury –
I don’t always make time for the more luxurious things in life, but when you’re nurturing self love, treating yourself is especially important. whether its doing your nails, or getting your hair done, a little luxury can go a long way. A couple specific luxurious things I can recommend for this valentines day are actually things I’ve already mentioned in a couple of my Self Care Sunday posts. Have a bath, or do a face mask. Around Valentine’s day, LUSH comes out with a Unicorn Horn bubble bar and I love nothing more than sliding into a steaming hot bubble bath surrounded by this sparkling scent. I also love getting out of the bath glittery and smelling good. The face mask I’d recommend for this day of luxury are really any of the LUSH Jelly Face Masks specifically, FOMO or Bunny Moon. I love these masks for a little more luxury, because they’re thick and creamy, and I love that I have to mush them up in my hands before I can put them on my face. I also notice immediate results every time I use these masks, and that always makes me feel good.
Luxury is anything that makes you feel luxurious, so really just do something you love, that makes you feel good.

And finally,
Spend Sometime Loving Yourself-
I know a lot of this has been about self love and loving yourself through actions, but today, there should be time for some mindful self love. Look in the mirror and pick out every single thing you love about yourself, or focus on all the things you love while you meditate, whatever being mindful means to you really. No matter what you do, it is important to make time to be mindful in your self love, because it really forces you to sit with it, feel it, and internalize it. 

Even If you’re alone this valentines day, take some time to love yourself. Because In the words of my hero RuPaul,
“If you can’t love yourself how the hell you gonna love somebody else”
Amen to that.

Self Care Sunday #8 – Melt Your Stress Away With A Diffuser!

This Christmas, I was given a diffuser, and to say I’m obsessed is an extreme understatement. There is something about surrounding myself in a scent that centres me and allows me to rest that is truly amazing. 

This Sunday I am recommending something a little more expensive, and a little more involved, but it is also something that I truly believe in. To me, a diffuser reminds me of the feeling of sitting in a scented bath, just without all the water. Because I love peppermint scented bath bombs, and I have a peppermint scented oil for my diffuser, the feeling are similar.
I tend to prefer the diffuser when I’m busy though, mostly because when I have a bath I’m doing it to totally shut down, and sometimes I just don’t have time to do that. The beauty of a diffuser is that  I can get the feeling of soaking myself in a lovely and calming scent, while I’m studying, reading, or organizing my calendar.
When I turn My diffuser on it’s time for me to breath deeply while I’m doing something that involves me quietly sitting at my desk and working on things for myself.

I Throughly love this diffuser, the sleek design looks amazing in my bedroom and on my desk, but beyond that, it is so so relaxing. This has to do with both the way it diffuses essential oils as well as the adjustable LED light. The fact that I can change the light at will is a nice feature because I can adjust it to any mood, and I can adjust it to help me sleep.

I’m a sucker for anything peppermint, so it makes sense that I’m obsessed with this oil. But I also love it because it’s uplifting, and I feel like I’m surrounded in a cloud of comfort and happiness when my bedroom is filled with this scent.
If essential oils aren’t your thing, I know Saje has some wonderful blends.

 If you don’t like the look of my specific diffuser, have no fear! Amazon, Bed Bath and Beyond, and even Walmart sells diffusers. They come in all sorts of sizes, colours, and price ranges. They’re accessible, and there’s really no reason to not at least look into it if you think a diffuser could work for you. I know this suggestion is a little more, but I promise I wouldn’t be suggesting it if I didn’t believe in it.

Christmas look

A Casual Christmas

I know this is a little late, because it’s February,  but lets just ignore that. I wanted to share the makeup look that I did for Christmas dinner this year, because, well I loved it, but also because I thinks it’s a fairly easy, casual glam look that is definitely family appropriate. I also want to take this oppurtunity to share the makeup products that I got for christmas, and how I used them!
I spent Christmas this year at my families cabin, so clearly I didn’t need to go full glam, but I also wanted to look my best for such a special occasion. This, combined with the amazing presents I got, created a need to do my makeup, and in turn, created the above face. I wanted to do a post on this look, both because It’s what I wore for christmas, but also because it’s a very low key natural glam look, and I wanted to share how I achieved it.

Step One: Primer
My first makeup step is always primer, and because I’m a combo girl, I use two primers. I do this because If I only use a matte primer, my skin gets insanely dry and I look cakey and just not cute. On the flip side of that though, If I only use a hydrating primer, my T-zone, specifically my nose, wont hold onto makeup and ends up looking like I missed foundation on my nose, and rubbed it with oil instead.  When I discovered multi priming, it changed my life.
The first primer I go in with is the 
DR. BRANDT SKINCARE pores no more® pore refiner primer 
I use this primer to help control the oil on my nose, but I only put it down the bridge of my nose, and on the sides of it, I make sure to stay away from the creases at the base, because I’m dry there, and my find my foundation blends better there if its over a hydrating primer.

The secondprimer I go in with is the FIRST AID BEAUTY Hello FAB Coconut Skin Smoothie Priming Moisturizer
I use this primer on the rest of my face. It is an amazing hydrating primer, and it allows any foundation (even matte) to smoothly blend into my insanely dry skin.

Step Two: Foundation
In this look I’m wearing shade number 1 in the URBAN DECAY Naked Skin Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid Foundation
I’m typically drawn to buildable medium coverage foundations because I don’t love the way full coverage foundations feel. In fact, I normally wear a fairly light weight skin tint from Pixi ,  but sometimes I want something a little more, and thats is where this foundation really shines. For Christmas this year, and for any casual glam look, this foundation serves as a perfect base for a light contour, and a blinding highlight. 

Step Three: Concealer
My all time go to concealer is the 
URBAN DECAY Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer.
I wear the shade “Fair Neutral” because its slightly lighter than my foundation shade, and I use it to highlight. I have gnarly under eye circles, and this concealer dose an amazing job of, well, concealing them. I’m going to do a more in depth review of this product in a let post, so I’ll leave it there for now. The take away from this for now is that I love it.

Step Four: Powder
On a daily basis I use the Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder In Translucent 
I love this powder because its extremely affordable and I can bake my nose (yes I bake my stupid oily nose),  set my under eyes,  and I can powder my face. It makes me look smooth, and it allows my other powders to blend seamlessly. Theres really not much else to say about it, but my fellow Canadians are going to have to order this in amazon, and its not quite as affordable, but you get a lot of really good product, so its worth it.

Step Five: Contour
Now, this product was one of my christmas presents, and I’m already obsessed with it. The first time I used it was in this look, and now I can’t stop
To contour I use the 
TOO FACED Cocoa Contour Chiseled to Perfection
I have the light/medium pallet and its perfect for my skin tone. I’m super pale, I’m normally the lightest shade in any foundation, and contour powders tend to look orangey on me, or they don’t blend. This contour shade is amazing though, it looks like a true shadow, and it blends like butter. Again, there will be a full review of this product coming soon, so keep in touch and look for it! 

Step Six: Blush
Typically I like a peachy-pinky blush, and I used just that in this look.
In this look I’m using the 
TOO FACED Sweet Peach Papa Don’t Peach Blush
I am absolutely obsessed with this blush. I got it last summer and I haven’t stopped using it since.  The peachy shade and the shimmer make it the perfect blush for everything from a glowy everyday look, to a shining, highlighted soft glam. It is the perfect base, and it works with just about any warm toned eye.

Step Seven: Highlight
Highlighter is easily my favourite step in any makeup routine that I do. I love the glow. I have played with a ton of highlighters, but the one I’m using the NARS Highlighting Blush In Albatross
I love the golden undertones, and the extreme glow that this highlighter has when applies with the proper brush. I prefer to use a tapered highlighting brush rather than a fan brush with this, because it allows the glow to be a lot more intense.  

Step Eight: Brows
I love my eyebrows in this look, I mean I love them in general, but they are perfect in this look. It took me a long time to find an eyebrow routine that I liked, but this look is an amazing example of what I do with my brows all the time.
As a base, I’m using the 
NYX Professional Makeup Micro Brow Pencil – Taupe
I use this pencil a lot, and it is my all time favourite thing for doing my brows. I love that I can define, and fill in my brows with it. Because my brows can be naturally kinda wonky, I appreciate something that helps me even them out.

As a finishing touch in this look, and to add a little kick, I’m using the BENEFIT COSMETICS Gimme Brow in 3 – Medium
It looks like this products is on a hiatus (hopefully briefly), but I truly love it, so I hope its back soon.

Step Nine: Eyes
My eyes, oh my eyes. I love doing my eye makeup, especially when its a warm look. For this look I picked something warm and casual.
To create this look I used another christmas present, the TARTE Tartelette™ Flirt Eyeshadow Palette
I’ve been looking for a small travel  palette for a long time, and when I found this one I knew I needed it. It’s the perfect palette for an every day, and a dramatic look. For this look I fluffed “Gaze” into my crease with a fluffy brush, and then I took “Hotline” on a slightly more tapered brush and placed is a little bit lower than “Gaze”. I blended these together, and then blended “Playful” on my outer corner. Finally, I used a dense brush to put “Passion” on my lid, and an angled brush to smudge “snuggle” along my lash line.

L’OREAL Lash Paradise Washable Mascara –  Blackest Black

Step Ten: Lips
I chose a warm, deep rose, nude for this look because it offsets the eyes well, and it adds something to the look as a whole.
The exact lipstick I’m wearing is the ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLSLiquid Lipstick In Allison
But unfortunately,  this shade was limited edition. So I looked up some dupes for it.
In my search for dupes I found an article on Temptalia.com. This article suggests quite a few potential dupes, and it also provides a percentage rating on how similar it is. Overall, I love this website and I’ll definitely use it again if I’m looking for a dupe for a limited edition product.
The two most similar dupes in the article are:
The COLOURPOP Lippie Stix In Cami at a 95% match
and The NARS Powermatte Lip Pigment In American Woman at a 93% match
The formulas are obviously not going to be the same because neither of these are liquid to matte lipsticks, but the colours do look very very similar, and I think either would look amazing with a this eye look, or one similar to it.  

Step Eleven: Setting spray
The final step to this look, or any look really, is setting spray. I wanted to lock this look in, and make sure my oily nose could hold onto foundation.
The setting spray I’m using in this look is the 
URBAN DECAY All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray
I love this setting spray because the spray is light even, and it melts the excessive amount of powder into my face. I truly love the finish it gives my face. Just make sure your mascara is dry before spraying it, I’ve made that mistake before, and its not pretty.

So there you have it! My causal glam look!
Again, I know its February, and way too late to be posting a Christmas look, but I still wanted to post this as a casual glam look that I just happened to be wearing on christmas.

Self Care Sunday #7 – New Year, New Care

Well, I know I sort of disappeared, but I’m Baaaaaaack! Just in Time to kick off 2018! Today is the first Sunday of 2018. So I figured it was only appropriate to make my comeback with a post about how to prepare yourself for the year ahead. In this Self Care Sunday  I”m going to talk about how you can most successfully prepare yourself for 2018, and I’m also going to go over my number one self care suggestion.

So I’m going to start by talking about my favourite  self care discoveries from 2017, and the first one that I want to note, also happens to be my most go to self care suggestion.
Take a break, and put yourself first.
This tip is the reason that I started Self Care Sunday to begin with. When I’m making these self care suggestions what I’m really trying to say is “put yourself first”. I’ve said it a million times, but self care isn’t just having a bath, or listening to music, it’s also work. It’s doing things like cleaning the space around you, or sitting down and planning the week ahead of you, or even setting goals. Putting yourself first means doing things for yourself.
In a society where we are pushed to go faster, longer, and harder, it can sometimes feel lazy and selfish to put yourself first. Because there are so many people depending on us, and so much we have to do on a daily basis, we don’f feel like we have time for ourselves. As a result of this, we are stressed out, burnt out, and worn out. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m guilty of pushing myself too hard and ignoring my self care. I’m the girl that for a stupidly long time lived by the words “If I’m not burnt out I’m not working hard enough”, and I for sure still fall into this toxic cycle. The moral is, I’m not perfect, but I’m actively trying to improve my self care, and now I live by the words “remember to take a break and treat yourself”. 2017 was a year of learning about what I need to do to take care of myself, and I hope that in 2018 I can  use my little slice of internet to share this.

And Finally, I’m going to share my number one tip for preparing for 2018.
Get organized and stay organized.
I am the queen of getting myself organized for 24 hours, and then immediately falling back into my old ways of disheveledness. However, in those 24 hours  of organization, I feel better than ever. For this reason, I encourage you to go into 2018 in some semblance of organization, and I challenge you to stick to it for at least the moth of January. I’ve already written a post on the benefits of keeping a planner, and that is one of the ways I attempt to stay organized.  Alas though, I always forget it exists, but in 2018 I’m challenging myself to stick with it.
I’m also going into 2018 with a clean space around me. Meaning, my bedroom is spotless, and I’ve re organized my vanity area. The benefits of having a clean and organized space are endless, but specifically, it will help to keep your mind clear if you don’t have to worry about clutter.
The long and the short of it is, if I can stay organized, you can stay organized, at least for January. Let’s see if we can do this together!

Welcome To A New Year, and A New Blog

So today is Monday, January 1st, 2018. It’s the start of a new week, a new month, and a new year. It’s also the start of my new posting schedule! I will of course continue with “Self Care Sunday” as a weekly feature (check out my tip from yesterday), but in this new year, I’m also setting another day in the week to post.  I’ve decided to post on Wednesday’s. I picked Wednesday for no other reason than I felt like it’s spaced well from Sunday. This second weekly post will focus on the beauty side of my blog, this will include more reviews, looks, and some tips regarding both makeup and skincare. I also want to make some posts regarding my fitness goals for this term. I’m a firm believer in taking care of yourself,  and I think it’s an extremely important aspect of self care. Because at the end of the day, if you don’t feel good on the outside how are you supposed to feel good on the inside. 

As you can probably tell, I’ve also made some pretty obvious design changes. All these changes were made with all of you in mind! I want all of my readers to know what I’m about from the get go, hence, the new banner. All the changes I have made, especially the banner, are all subject to change as my blog grows and develops. 

This year I’m committing to expanding my blog, I want to include all aspects of self care, and this includes beauty. My beauty routines are such a staple self care technique in my life, and I want to use my platform to share this. I’m also committing to posting twice a week, but I am still human, if I miss a post I’ll make sure to tweet it though so make sure you’re following me on twitter @jordananne76.

Self Care Sunday (Thursday?) #6 – Have a Cup Of Tea

Fist and for most, I apologize for my extended absence. I explain this a little more in depth my very fist “Lets Talk” post.  And yes, I know that its technically a Thursday, but I figured that I owed you guys a self care tip.

One of the simplest ways to take care of yourself is to just take a second, relax, and have a hot cup of tea (or coffee, but I don’t do caffein). Theres something extremely calming about putting on the kettle and steeping a cup of tea, especially when its in my favourite mug .Which so happens to be any of the mugs from Indigo Books.

But I especially love this “Tea Freak” mug!

In my favourite mug, I love to steep peppermint tea . I appreciate the fact that it can calm my stomach (because I definitely need that when I’m anxious). I drink it mostly though because it’s caffine free and I love the taste of it. At this point I’m pretty sure I’m made of 90% peppermint tea. In a day I’ll have minimum one, sometime more like three or four teas, it really depends where my stress level is, and how close I am to a Starbucks.

So my tip this week? Take a break, put on the kettle, and make yourself some tea.

Lets Talk Self Care Sunday

Sometimes self care is not doing something. The last few weeks of my life have been unreasonably stressful and overwhelming, and I’m not going to lie to you, I probably had the time to have gotten it done, but I just couldn’t find the energy. When I’m In a place like this, I tend to run on willpower alone, and the last couple of weeks, I’ve only had the willpower to attend school and mandatory activities. Thats not to say that I don’t see my blog as a commitment, but unfortunately its what suffered in my quest to take care of myself.

Right now, I post Self Care Sunday weekly, and I apologize for missing the last few weeks, I hope to post something soon. I sincerely hope this will not happen again, because I really like posting self care tips weekly, and I hope that these posts are helping people, and I don’t want to let you guys down.

As I’m a full time university student things are quite hectic right now, but I hope to get on top of a posting schedule soon!

Thank you all so much for the understanding, I’ll be posting something a little more upbeat soon.

Self Care Sunday #5 – The Art Of A Hot Shower

In preparation for the week ahead, try to have a hot shower as part of your self care routine this Sunday. Not just any hot shower though, a purposeful and rejuvenating hot shower. Something I’ve learned about showers, is that there is a difference between showering, and having a hot, relaxing shower. I tend to turn to the comforting warmth of a hot shower to wash away any stress that I may have accumulated over the weekend.

When I shower, I love to listen to music, and of course I sing along. My shower head thinks I have a beautiful voice, though I think my family may disagree. In all seriousness though, music allows me to complexity zone out and relax as the hot water washes away my problems.

To listen to music in the shower, I highly recommend using a waterproof bluetooth speaker. I use the Monster SuperStar BackFloat Bluetooth Speaker

Monster Bluetooth SpeakerI love this speaker because it allows me to have a speaker directly in the shower with me so I can actually hear what I’m listening to over the running water. When I have this speaker in the shower with me, I know I’m having a shower that is going to relax me, and allow my mind to rest.

While Showering is also important for general self care purposes, this Sunday I want you to have a shower that does more that just clean your body, I want you to have a shower that cleanses your mind (And your hair, check out my hair care routine!)

Self Care Sunday #4 – The Pros Of Having a Planner

I have said before that self care goes beyond doing things that you want to do, and in fact, a lot of self care is doing things that you have to do. One of these such things is organization. I am a serial procrastinator, which means I tend to avoid doing things until the last possible second, it also means I’m not always the most organized. I always get things done, but not without more stress than is generally needed. So to take care of myself, I try to sit down and write things in a planner.

I haven’t been super successful at actually following through with a planner in the past, but I’m trying especially hard right now, and I’ve found having a planner that I love the look of has helped me with follow trough. I try to put everything in my planner, literally my entire life. My planner goes beyond my assignment due dates and study schedule (I’m a student), I have doctors appointments, dinner dates with friends, I even have a gym schedule in my planner. Do I always follow through with these plans? Not at all, I’d be lying if I said I focused on more than just school stuff. The important thing for me though is that I’m trying to keep everything physically written out in one place. When I’m overwhelmed and spinning, it helps me to be able to look at a filled out planner.

My suggestion for this week? Get a planner, or at the very least, write a to do list. Its not the most enjoyable task, and it defiantly isn’t something thats considered pampering. For a lot of us though, especially my fellow visual learners, It helps keep our thoughts and ideas strait.

Self Care Sunday #3 – Sheet Mask Life

Note: So I know its technically Monday, but this week life happened and I was unable to get this post out on Sunday, But I still wanted to post my self care tip for the week.

One of my absolute favourite things to do as a treat for myself is a face mask. I love laying down and feeling like my skin is getting a treat as I allow myself to relax. A face mask always gives me an extra pep in my step, after I’ve had a mask on I feel like I can take on the world. However, I don’t always have time to put on a wash off mask, so I heavily rely on sheet masks to give me that extra boost. Because many of them don’t require you to rinse the excess serum off, sheet masks are easy to throw on before I leave the house (for my makeup free days).

It soothes and hydrates my overly dry skin. I love, and highly recommend this mask.
